Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that recreates the shape of a breast that has been removed or partially removed. The goal is to create a breast that looks and feels as natural as possible.

How it's done

  • Implants: Saline or silicone implants can be used to reconstruct the breast.
  • Tissue flaps: Tissue from another part of the body, like the abdomen, back, thigh, or buttock, is used to create a new breast mound. This is called autologous tissue reconstruction.
  • Nipple and areola: A nipple and areola can be created using a tattoo, tissue from the body, or a stick-on nipple and areola.

When it's done

  • Immediate reconstruction: The surgery is done at the same time as the mastectomy.
  • Delayed reconstruction: The surgery is done after the mastectomy incisions have healed and breast cancer therapy is complete.

What to expect

  • The results of breast reconstruction might not be clear right away.
  • The reconstructed breast might not look or feel the same as the original breast.
  • It's important to be realistic about what you can expect.
